The Life of George White

 
GEORGE WHITE.
 
George White was born in Buffalo Erie county, New York, May 26th 1827. His parents died when he was quite young and he went to Princeton, Ill. to make his home with his oldest sister. In 1847, when 20 years of age he learned of the discoveries of gold in California and started to make his way there, walking over the Rocky mountain and the "American Desert." However, he remained there only a short time and in 1849 returned to St. Louis where he secured a place on a steam boat and ran as upper clerk the steam boat from St. Louis to Ft. Leavenworth until 1853.
 
In 1854 he was married to Miss Emma Strode and engaged in the mercantile business at Ft. Leavenworth until 1856 when he came Johnson county and took up a homestead two miles west of Olathe. In 1861 he was elected sheriff of Johnson county and moved to Olathe during his term of office as sheriff of Johnson county in 1862 and 63 and then moved back to the homestead where he lived continuously until 1902 at which time he retired and moved to Olathe where he lived until his death October 19th, 1914.
 
He is survived by his wife and seven children; H.B. White, of Olathe, Kansas; E. T. White, Buhl, Idaho; Chas. A. White, Ellensburg, Washington; Mrs. Laura Nowland, Denver, Colorado; S. C. White, Kansas City, Mo.; John D. White, Pittsburg, Kansas, and Mrs. Berry, Los Angeles, Calif.

On Monday morning at 2 o'clock Mr. Geolrge White passed away in Kansas City, aged 87 years, 4 months, 23 days. At the time of his death Mr. White was probably the oldest settler of Johnson county, having moved here in 1856 and homesteaded 2 miles west of Olathe where he lived continuously until ten years ago when he retired and moved to Olathe. The burial will be from the home, 218 N. Pine this afternoon at 2 o'clock. W. A. Nance officiating. A complete sketch of the life of the deceased will be given next week.

GEORGE WHITE, farmer and dealer in stock, was born at Alden, Erie Co., N. Y., in 1828; removed to Princeton, Bureau Co., Ill.,., in 1844, and a year later engaged in the mercantile business as a clerk. In 1848, he went to St. Louis, Mo., and was employed in the same capacity for a year; then clerked on steamboats on the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. in 1830, he crossed the plains to California and followed mining for a short time, and for a few months was employed as a clerk in a hotel in Sacramento; returning home in 1852, he engaged in the grocery business in Bureau County, remaining there some three years, after which he again took to boating on the Mississippi River for a short time. In August, 1855, he came to Kansas and folloed mercantile business at Leavenworth. In January, 1857, he came to Olathe and located on his present farm, which consists of 165 acres. His place is well improved with fine buildings and an orchard. Mr. White is considered one of the largest raisers of hogs in the county. In September, 1862, he was appointed Under-Sheriff, and re-appointed in 1864, serving, in al, about forty months. Mr. White was married in St. Louis, Mo., October 16, 1855, to Laura V. Strode. They have nine living children--H. B., Minnie M., Eddie C., Charles, Schuyler C., Ida E., Laura, John and Hattie M.; one deceased--Frank S. Who died May 10, 1882."
