The Life of William M Beauchamp

Death of Mr. William Beauchamp

The death of Mr. William Beauchamp, for Olathean for many years, occurred at his home in Topeka, Monday evening. The body was bough to Olathe Wednesday and the funeral service held at 2:30 at the Julian Chapel and burial made in the Olathe cemetery  by the side of his wife who sas buried eleven years ago. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Elliott, and old family friend, who was assisted by Rev. F.C. Everitt, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. At his request, the pall l bearers were members of the Men’s Bible class of the Presbyterian church, which he taught for years.

Mr. Beauchamp was born in Indiana in 1833, on April 3, which would make his age, 93 past. In 1854 he and two brothers drove a herd of cattle form Iowa to California. The Indians got several of their horses and they were obliged to  break in some of the cattle to take the place of the horses  as beasts of burden. Happily the Indians did not molest the cattle –probably because buffalo were more plentiful and fatter and there was the added zest of the hunting and killing.

The Beauchamps lived here in Olathe for 25 years, moving to Topeka five years ago. Surviving are the daughter with whom he lived, Miss Laura, Mrs. Cora Ambrose, Kansas City, Kansas; Mrs. Kate Rickenrode, Marysville, Mo.; and Mrs. Caroline Ballentine, whose home is in Branson, Mo., although at present she is in Honolulu. Judge J.O. Rankin of Paola is a son in law.

William Beauchamp was a fine, lovable, kindly old gentleman, whom it was a pleasure indeed to know and converse with. He had a vast store of knowledge on almost any subject and the subject nearest his heart was religion. Safe to say William Beauchamp never wronged any person in his whole life of almost a century.
