The Life of Josephine Florence Beauchamp

MRS. WM. BEAUCHAMP

Mrs. Josephine Florence Flora Beauchamp, wife of William Beauchamp, who died of heart trouble at her home in Olathe, Kansas, Tuesday, June 1st, 1915, at the mature ago of 81 years, was born in New Albany Indiana, July 26th, 1833. She attended the public schools of her native town, after which she attended the University of Hartsville, Ind. She was united In marriage to William Beauchamp June 15, 1860 in Danville, Ill.  To this union were born five daughters, all of whom, except Mrs. J. O. Rankin, survive her.

In the spring of 1862, she with her husband, moved to North Missouri, where she experienced many of the hardships and perplexities of those turbulent war times, while he was at the front. While living in Chillicothe, Mo., she with a few other union women prepared and carried food to the Union soldiers who stood in line of battle, awaiting the attack of the enemy. Often of night the Union guard was stationed but a few rods from her home.

In 1870 the family moved to Avalon, Livingston County, Mo., where they made their home until April, 1892, when they came to Olathe, Kansas. Mrs. Beauchamp was a member of the United Brethren church from early girlhood, until she joined the Presbyterian church of Olathe, a few years since. She was an active member of the W. R. C. at Olathe, until she became too feeble to attend its meetings.

The funeral service was at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon June 3rd, from the family residence, where the body lay in state from one to three o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. S. F. Riepma, pastor of the Presbyterian church, who so beautifully compared her life to a long poem, filled with kind facts, gentle words and loving deeds. The music, so effectively and touchingly rendered by Mesdames Rhoades and Blankenbeker, was the old time hymns which she most loved and often sang.
