The Life of Samuel Calloway Ashlock

Mr. Samuel Ashlock

Mr. Samuel C. Ashlock was born July 1, 1835, in Green county, Illinois, died, May 19, 1914, at the home of his son Oscar, near DeSoto, Kans., where he had been taken on Sunday thinking the ride might help him, but the inexorable reaper visited the home last Tuesday and took from our midst one well respected by all.

Mr. Ashlock lived in Johnson county fifty-seven years. Was as well liked as he was well known. His kind, quiet disposition was endeared to young as well as old. He was a good neighbor and friend to all. It was little wonder then, that the sad news cast a gloom over all. Though suffering many months from a lingering sickness, he was not confined to his bed entirely nor did he ever complain. Daily during his sickness his friends grieved with anxious looks concerning his health and hoped to the end he might survive his last attack but alas, providence willed otherwise. But his memory shall live. Death may hide away our friends and loved ones beneath the sod but his spirit shall remain with us.

Our departed friend lived a good honest life may he rest in peace. To the bereaved family and relatives especially his (two daughters who could not be here on account of sickness) we extend our heartfelt sympathy. Mr. and Mrs. Ashlock were married fifty-seven years, February 4, 1914. To this union were born twelve children, four dying in infancy and one daughter Olive proceed him just five weeks and six days. He leaves two sons and five daughters. They are Oscar of DeSoto, Kansas, James of Loring, Kansas, Nellie Leveridge of Olathe, Kansas, Ethel Kirkpatrick of Rosedale, Kansas; Brace Bell of Sedgewick, Kansas, Laura Burge of Dallas, Oregon, and Nettie Miller of Anadarka, Okla., and also an aged wife. Early in life ha was a member of the Baptist church and Thursday, May 21, 1914, his funeral was held at the Baptist church in Olathe at 1:30 by Rev. Harvey. He was laid to rest in the Olathe cemetery.
