The Life of HAROLD FREED

Harold Freed was born in Des Moines Iowa September 19, 1923 to Iva and James Freed. He passed away on September 6, 2015 at Brookdale of Allenmore Assisted Living in Tacoma Washington. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie in 1994 just 2 weeks before their 50th wedding anniversary. He was also preceded in death by his son Harold R Freed. He is survived by his daughter Jacquelyn Mattox (Richard) 6 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Harold lived in Des Moines until 6 years ago when his daughter brought him to Tacoma where she could better look after him. He did not really want to leave Iowa and told everyone that his daughter had kidnapped him. His heart was always in Iowa and now he will be there with his wife forever.

Harold served in the Army during WWII. He was a life member of the AMVETS organization. He was also a member of the Masons of Des Moines Iowa. He was a volunteer with the VA hospital until he could no longer continue due to a decline in his health.

He was a custom cabinet maker. Later he worked for the United Postal Service retiring in 1985. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening and making things out of leather. He liked to give custom leather items to friends and family.

He loved to entertain as a clown. He could blow the balloons without a machine and made many balloon animals, swords, hats etc. for the kids. He also was a Santa Claus. He was usually in a good mood and liked to joke and tease with the caregivers, staff and residents at Brookdale.

Thank you to the staff at Brookdale of Allenmore for their love and care. He was treated like family and liked living there, even though it wasn’t Iowa. They even made sure that there was a pot for his tomatoes by his window when he could no longer get to the patio.

There will be a memorial service at Brookdale with a clown and balloons

There will also be a memorial in Des Moines, Iowa on October 24 from 2:00 to 4:00 at the AMVETS, 2818 5th Ave, Des Moines Iowa
