The Life of ELSIE EVELYN KERR PORTER

Evelyn E. Porter, 95, passed away June 14, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center.
She was born June 5, 1920 in Purdy, Iowa to Jonas and Mary Lenig.

Evelyn graduated from East High School and attended Grandview College. She lived on the eastside of Des Moines for most of her life. She married Robert Kerr February 14, 1942 in Arkansas. Robert passed away November 11, 1967 in Des Moines. She then married Ray Porter in June 1969 in Des Moines. Ray passed away in May 1993 in Alamo, Texas. Evelyn worked at National Handcraft for 15 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of A.B.W.A. and was Woman of the Year from 1971 to 1972. As a younger person, she enjoyed bowling, golfing, baking, and playing cards. She was a wiz at working crossword puzzles. Evelyn had crocheted and cross-stitched numerous projects of love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends over the years. She thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge, Rummicube, and Hand & Foot with her family and friends and liked being a member of the Red Hat Society. Evelyn was the family historian. She was grandma to everyone’s dogs and cats and had a special affinity for butterflies. She was a member of Union Park Baptist Church which had a special place in her heart. She loved the Lord and her family very much. She was devoted to both her husbands and being a mom, grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma was the joy of her life.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Robert “Bob” and wife Marsha Kerr of Stilwell, OK; daughter, Shirley Carson of Cheyenne, WY; nephews, James Smith and Larry and Frank Gaddis; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren with one on the way; and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands; Robert Kerr and Raymond S. Porter; brothers, Norman and Boyd Lenig; and sisters, Kathryn Loffredo and Lovina Gaddis.

Graveside services will be held 2pm Friday, June 19. 2015 at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will take place from 6-8pm Thursday, June 18 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
