Auxiliary Mary S. Hallowell, WAAC, 1908-1943

Mary S. Hallowell graduated from Lansdowne High School in 1925 and worked at Beatty Brothers grocery store in Lansdowne. She enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps in November 1942. She was the first East Lansdowne woman to enlist in the service of her country, and the first WAAC from Delaware County to die while on active duty. During a recruiting assignment in Syracuse, New York, Mary was taken ill and died suddenly on April 10, 1943. A Lutheran service with full military honors was conducted from her parents’ home on April 14, 1943. She was 35.
