The Life of JOAN LEE MCFARLAND

Joan Lee McFarland, 74, passed away suddenly on February 13, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. She was born January 17, 1941, to Kenneth and Xenia Bowers in Des Moines, Iowa.

Joan married Everett on July 19, 1959. They made their home in Des Moines and were blessed by three children. She retired in 2012 as a Site Coordinator for Polk County Senior Services. Joan was an avid bowler for more than 30 years and loved surrounding herself with the ones she loved.

Joan had a feisty spirit and a zeal for life like no other. She was a no-nonsense woman who believed you should greet life head on – grab it with both hands and hang out for a wild ride.

She will be deeply missed by her husband, Everett McFarland; children, David McFarland, Brenda Emelo, and Mary Ann Smith; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; as well as her brother, Lon Bowers; sister, Xenia Hamby; and beloved dog, Elvis. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Kenneth Bowers.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Avenue in Des Moines. A memorial gathering will be held at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., following the graveside service.
