The Life of MILDRED MARIE HAWTHORNE

Mildred Marie Hawthorne, age 81, of Denver and formerly of Des Moines, died Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the Denver Sunset Home, Denver, Iowa.

Mildred was born on August 25, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Wesley and Edna (Phillips) Best. She was raised in Des Moines where she came to know the Lord at age ten and was baptized shortly thereafter. At age twelve Mildred and her family moved to Texas due to her father''s health. Her father did not benefit from the move south. At age thirteen they returned to Des Moines and in May of 1952, Mildred graduated from East Des Moines High School. On July 11, 1953, Mildred was united in marriage to Oren Hawthorne in East St. Louis, Illinois Justice of the Peace. Oren knew Mildred wished they would have had a fancy church wedding. So on their 50th wedding anniversary, he gave her that wish, renewing their vows at Bethany Reformed Church in Des Moines. During her life Mildred worked as a bookkeeper for State of Iowa, Iowa Power and Light, ACME Piano and Organ, Moss and Company, Madeline Shepard, and Mercy Medical Center all in Des Moines. Mildred retired in June of 2003. In December of 2010, Mildred and Oren moved to Plainfield, Iowa.

Mildred was a past member of Bethany Reformed Church in Des Moines and a current member of Horton Baptist Church. She loved going to Bible studies and taking part in church skits. Mildred also enjoyed holiday and birthday dinners, decorating crafts, reading, and spending time with her family, especially, her grandchildren.

Mildred''s memory is honored by: her husband, Oren Hawthorne of Denver Sunset Home; three children, Dennis (Valorie) Hawthorne Grimes, Cindy Diemer of Des Moines, and Denise (Don) Brase of Plainfield; seven grandchildren, Eric Hawthorne, Gavin Hawthorne, Shelly Rejba, Kristy Diemer, Tony Diemer, Becky (Joey) Polkus, and Brandon (Shelby) Fritz; and twelve great-grandchildren, Cole, Chloe, Katelyn, Kyle, Collin, Junior, Kara, Rosa, Christian, Hunter, Elly, and Joelyn. She was preceded in death by: her parents; a sister, Dorothy Kappelman; and two brothers, Edwin and Edgar Best.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20 at the Horton Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 20 at Horton Baptist Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
