The Life of BARBARA ANN COMITO PENNINGTON

Barbara Comito Pennington, 85, passed away on August 24th, after suffering from congestive heart failure. She was born in Des Moines, IA to Anthony C. and Katherine L. Comito. After attending Lincoln High School in Des Moines, she was married to Francis Wilkerson in 1946. To this union were born two children, Michael Anthony and Gerie Marie.

Following the death of her husband Francis, Barbara worked for the State of Iowa, then for Blue Cross-Blue Shield, before retiring in 1983. After retiring from Blue Cross, she worked for friends Betty Lathrum at Betty’s day care center and Ardene Downing at the Apple Tree Inn, both in Indianola.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Ernest and William Comito, her two sisters, Kay Ames and Janice Kennedy, her son-in-law, Ronald Oxley, and by her two husbands, Francis Wilkerson and Ted Pennington, Sr., as well as by step-children Alan and Susan Pennington.

She is survived by her son, Michael Wilkerson, her daughter, Gerie Oxley, her sister Virginia Snow (Morris) and step-children Ted Pennington, Jr. (Betty) and Nancy Wheeler (Frank). She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, as well as by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 5 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, September 6 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial of cremains will be at Highland Memorial Gardens in Des Moines, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations be made to Peggy Snow, a niece of Barb’s who is suffering from a rare and potentially crippling disorder known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
