The Life of PATRICIA JOYE VAN HOESEN SMITH

Pat Smith, 82, was born January 18, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Robert and Opal Van Hoesen. She passed away at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines on November 30, 2014.

Pat was a longtime member of Easton Place United Methodist Church, Des Moines City Bowling Board, and past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. She was a charter member and past president of the Friends of the Library for the Blind. She also received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for Brailling.

Pat had a great love for butterflies and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and reading. She also spent time solving puzzles such as crossword, jigsaw, and Sudoku.

Patricia is survived by her children, James W. Barton of Canton, OH, Robert L. Smith (Linda J.) of Olathe, KS, Paul L. Smith of Grinnell, Jackie Walkwitz of Des Moines, Patricia L. Eslinger of Des Moines, and James L. Smith (Kimberly A.) of Pleasant Hill; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, as well as an extended family and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Jack Leroy Smith and son, David M. Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

In loving memory of Patricia, memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa Department of the Blind – Friends of the Library.
