On September 15, 1923, in Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Ann was born the second of five children to parents, George and Mary Ellen (Warnock) Hutchinson. As a family, many countless hours were spent raising and harvesting the vegetables from the garden, milking the two cows, picking apples and completing other tasks along the way. It was as a young girl the life-long passion of vegetable gardening was instilled.

Graduating from Woodside School in Des Moines, IA, Mary Ann worked as a school secretary for a short time, until taking on the duties as a wife and mother. In her later years, she worked as a book keeper for about 20 years.

In 1942, at Marquisville Evangelical United Brethren Church in Marquisville, IA, Mary Ann married Robert Hobson. They were blessed with three children, Bob, George and Judy. Most of their years were spent in Des Moines, enjoying camping, fishing and boating. She especially relished the trips fishing in Minnesota, Canada and Alaska. In later years, Mary Ann also enjoyed visiting her son, George in Alaska.

Life changed for Mary Ann when Bob passed away in 1961. In 1975, she married Harley Chittick, at High Park Christian Church. She found herself once again a widow, as Harley passed in 1988. In 2000, Mary Ann moved to Prior Lake, MN, to help raise her great-grandchild and to be closer to her family.

Mary Ann was a member of the Sweet Adeline Choir and enjoyed competitions all over the country. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a woman’s group in Olin, IA. In her spare time, Mary Ann enjoyed needle point, stamping, sewing and macramé. Her love for tending to her flowers and garden, nurturing and harvesting the fruits of her labor continued throughout life.

A kind, caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mary Ann enjoyed life to the fullest and this was apparent through her great laugh. She was a faithful servant of the Lord, who took great interest in people’s lives she encounter.
