The Life of MICHAEL KELSO KENT

Michael Kelso Kent, age 68, died of natural causes in his Des Moines, Iowa home on Sunday, August 10, 2014.

He was born on September 27, 1945 to Richard Layton and Lillian Louise Wallace Kent. He grew up in Leominster, Massachusetts, where his parents were teachers at Fitchburg State College. They were frequent visitors to family in Des Moines.

After graduating from Drake University in 1967, Michael Kent joined the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War, and afterwards, returned to Drake and completed his Master’s degree in history. He taught at several Des Moines schools and coached softball. He also drove a Nabisco delivery truck for many years.

Until recently sidelined by injuries, Michael Kent was a longtime distance runner and won several age group titles in Iowa and other states.

Michael was a constant presence at all family gatherings. He is survived by his Aunt Barbara Kent, eleven Kent cousins and many other family members who all loved him.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2014, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
