The Life of ALFRED WESLEY CAREY

Alfred “Al” W. Carey of Urbandale, 86, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, July 13, 2014.

Visitation will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 19th at 10 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11a.m. and luncheon at 12 p.m.

With his family by his side, Al passed away at the Kavanagh House at 12:06 a.m. He was dearly loved by many and was a wonderful family man. He worked hard and he gave generously.

As a young man he worked for Carey Brothers, his family’s business. Then in 1963, he started Al Carey’s Urbandale Nursery. He always had a reputation in the community for being hardworking, honest and fair. He was involved in the Nurseryman’s Association of Iowa, the Lions Club, President of the Urbandale school board and was a Boy Scout leader. Everybody loved Al.

Al loved working in the yard, meticulously planting any and everything in his beautiful gardens, and growing the biggest, best tomatoes.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie and Simpson Carey; wives, Vivian Lawhead and Jeanne Tharpe; sister Aileen and brothers Conrad and Bud. He is survived by his brother, Rudy (Sharon) and by Al’s children, Michael, Crystal (Frank) Miller, Debbie, Robert (Michelle). He has 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
