The Life of JAMES RICHARD BODENSTEINER

James (Jim) Richard Bodensteiner, 64, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in Des Moines, IA, with his loving wife, Jacquin (Jaci), by his side. His battle with lymphomas and MDS was courageous.

James was born in Des Moines, IA on April 27, 1950. In his youth he played accordion and piano, and as a teen played keyboards with his "garage band" friends at dances around Iowa. He graduated from North High, attended Grand View College, and later went on to Iowa State University where he graduated with honors in technical writing, with studies in environmental sciences. He interned at Jester Park and with Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.

James'' working life included running a print shop at Triple F Feeds, and working on programs for the Energy and Land Quality Bureaus at the DNR. His obsession was bicycling, riding as many as 3, 000 miles a summer in his younger days. He loved spending time with family and friends, listening to music, brewing beer, experimenting with photography, enjoying the art scene, and hiking in nature.

James is survived by his wife Jacquin; son Christopher, daughter-in-law Michelle, granddaughters Haley and Lindsey, and sister Dorothy Bennett.

In deference to his wishes, no formal service will be held. A private family graveside gathering will be at a later date. Memorial donations to honor this kind gentle soul may be made in James'' name to: Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (515-288-1846), HCI Care Services (515-274-3400), Blank Children''s Hospital (515-241-6438), or Animal Rescue League (515-262-2612).
