The Life of ERMA MAY DURBIN SPECK

Erma May (Durbin) Speck was born May 12, 1923 in Des Moines, IA, the daughter of Ernest and Helen (Elings) Durbin. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and a resident of the area for all of her life with the exception of a time living in San Francisco during the War. She married Harlin Speck and during her working years, she was employed as a photo finisher at Rolee Photographers. Erma was a member of Clifton Heights Presbyterian Church. She was an avid Precious Moments collector and also enjoyed collecting angels, crocheting, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Erma passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 91. She is survived by her children, Donald Speck of Des Moines, Linda (John) Shaver of Prole, and Janice Connelly of New Virginia; ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and siblings, Lucille Kissel of Oak Park Heights, MN and Robert Durbin of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Audrey Putney, and brother, William Durbin.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, also at the funeral home.
