The Life of HAROLD KENNETH POORE

Harold Kenneth Poore, 85, was born in Beaconsfield, Iowa on May 14, 1928, the son of Alvin and Kathryn Poore. He passed away March 17, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Harold and his seven siblings were raised on a farm in rural Iowa. He met Beverly Nixon at the University of Iowa while working at the Mad Hatter Tea Room, and they were united in marriage April 9, 1949. Harold was the Daycare Program Manager for the Iowa Department of Human Services for many years.

Harold was a man of strong faith who quietly modeled Christianity every day of his life. He was active in his community as well as his church, Highland Park Christian Church, where he was a member for more than 50 years.

Harold was very artistic and musical. He loved animals, traveling - visiting every state and several countries - and taking pictures. Harold was an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoyed playing cards.

He was a kind, loving husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his family. Harold will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Beverly Nixon Poore; children, Michael (Jennifer) Poore, Karen (David) Williams, and Susan Howell; his grandchildren, Candace Adair, Lyndsey Russell, Benjamin Poore, Michael Williams, Timothy Williams, Jacqueline Howell, and Nicholas Howell; seven great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his siblings, Marjorie Knutson, Dwight Poore, Wesley Poore, Alberta Reed, Arthur Poore, Edwin Poore, and Edith De Haan.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014 at Highland Park Christian Church, 4260 NW 6th Drive in Des Moines, with burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church.
